Two decades ago smoking cessation, weight loss, combined with habitual behaviours such as nail biting and teeth grinding were the most common treatments I undertook in my practice. Now the most common issues people call about include: disruptive sleep patterns, lack of motivation and focus, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, which eventually manifest into anxiety and depression if left unattended. I am seeing an increased number of people who have more of these symptoms because they have delayed seeking help. You can sweep only so much under the rug. Some call this PTSD but it comes in many forms and we should not allow labels to discourage us from taking action. All of these issues have been amplified by external world issues, on top of a very difficult past three years in general for us all. Never have I witnessed so many people of all ages seeking guidance on how to help find a path to peace of mind, with the desire to confront and overcome other tangible challenges. No one thing is isolated, feeling overwhelmed is connected to many real and underlying pressures. It is important to address and treat as many interconnected root causes as possible, otherwise, we end up right back where we started! In the age of ‘quick fixes’ we have come to realize that superficial distractions are bandaid solutions, which are not meaningful and just delay true healing.
